The Monaco Grand Prix was halted during the opening lap after a huge crash involving Formula One drivers Sergio Perez and Kevin Magnussen.

Magnussen’s Haas teammate Nico Hulkenberg was also caught up in the collision, but all three drivers escaped unscathed.

Perez, who was 16th on the grid, was sent into the wall after Magnussen’s front-left wheel made contract with the rear-right of the Mexican’s Red Bull.

The Red Bull car was destroyed on impact, with all but one of the four wheels ripped off the vehicle.

Perez was not even required to head to the medical centre. But with debris scattered across the track, the race was suspended.

Stewards reviewed the first-lap incident, which saw the race red-flagged, and decided that no further investigation was required, while the Grand Prix was restarted a short time later.

Magnussen told Sky Sports he had expected Perez to leave a car width, adding: “From my point of view I was there and I got squeezed to the wall.”

Hulkenberg told Sky Sports: “It was a typical lap-one racing accident.

“Two drivers who both didn’t want to bail out and didn’t give enough room on a tight track like Monaco, and I was the unlucky victim there.”

Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz and McLaren’s Oscar Piastri also made contact at the start of the opening lap, leaving the Ferrari driver with a puncture.

Sainz was cleared of causing the collision, with the stewards deciding no further investigation was necessary.

Meanwhile, Esteban Ocon got a 10-second penalty for causing a first-lap collision with his Alpine teammate Pierre Gasly, which could be converted to a future penalty as he retired from the race.

Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc won the race.
