Sandwich maker Greencore, a major supplier to UK supermarkets, has recalled some products because of a risk of E.coli, the Food Standards Agency has said.

The products were recalled as a precaution just a week after the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) announced there had been an outbreak of E.coli which left some people in need of hospital treatment.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) said Greencore was recalling products from retailers including Boots, Asda, Co-op, Aldi and Amazon because of “possible contamination with E.coli”.

It is understood other manufacturers will issue their own recalls in the coming hours.

In a statement on Friday afternoon, the UKHSA said cases had nearly doubled in the last week – with a further 98 recorded – bringing the total number of people affected to 211.

They said based on information from 160 cases to date, 42% were admitted to hospital.

Last week, the cases of E.coli were linked to a “nationally distributed food item”, the UKHSA said, without giving any more detail on the product thought to be responsible.

The cases ranged from two years old to 79, with the majority of the infections in young adults.

An Asda spokesperson said: “We have been made aware by Greencore, who supply Asda and other retailers with pre-packed sandwiches, that they are recalling a number of products as a precaution because of the possible presence of E.coli.

“The full list of products is available on the Asda Product Recalls webpage. If you have purchased any of these products, do not eat them, please bring them back to your nearest store where you will be given a full refund.

“You do not need your receipt.”

Darren Whitby, head of incidents at the FSA said: “Sandwich manufacturers are taking a precautionary measure to recall various sandwiches wraps and salads in response to findings from investigations by the Food Standards Agency (FSA), Food Standards Scotland (FSS) and UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), who are working to identify the cause of an ongoing outbreak caused by shiga toxin-producing E.coli (Stec).”

E.coli are a diverse group of bacteria that are normally harmless and live in the intestines of humans and animals.

However some strains, like Stec, can make people very ill.
