Police were called to Burnside Lakes in the Cambridgeshire suburb of Cherry Hinton at 5.26pm on Monday over concerns for a teenager in the water.

Cambridgeshire Police said specialist teams attended but the boy has still not been found.

A spokesman said: “It is believed the boy, who is 16 and from the Essex area, was swimming in the lake with a group of friends when he got into difficulty.

“Search teams remain at the lake to find the boy and we ask that members of the public stay away from the area while this work is carried out.”

The force said that the boy’s family is aware.

Just a day earlier, on Sunday evening, a two-year-old boy died after being pulled from a canal in Wolverhampton.

The toddler was found in water near the canal towpath in Hendon Avenue, Ettingshall, after police were called at 5.30pm.

That incident followed the discovery of a 33-year-old man’s body on 6 August in a river in Coventry.

Ahead of a sunny spell last month, swimmers were warned of the dangers of open water.

“Use your hands to help you stay afloat and then, once you are through the initial shock, call for help or swim to safety if you can.”
