Emergency crews were called to the collision in Kilmarnock’s Macphail Drive, near to Culzean Crescent, on Thursday afternoon.

The crash comes just days after another double-decker bus smashed into a railway bridge in Glasgow, leaving a 60-year-old man in a critical condition and six others injured.

The Scottish Ambulance Service said it was alerted around 1.55pm and dispatched one ambulance and three special operations response teams (SORT) to the scene.

A spokesperson said: “Four patients were transported to University Hospital Crosshouse.”

Stagecoach West Scotland confirmed its number 6 service – which runs from Kilmarnock Bus Station to New Farm Loch – was involved in the collision with the low bridge.

A spokesperson said the company was aware of two people being injured, adding: “Investigations are ongoing and we are working closely with Police Scotland.”
