Police were called to a primary school in Dumfries after a pupil took a knife into the building.
Officers were alerted to the incident on Wednesday morning and have since spoken to the child’s guardians.
Dumfries and Galloway Council said staff took action once the alarm was raised and the blade was removed from the youngster’s possession.
A spokesperson for the local authority said no one was physically injured, and the incident was “handled in a timely manner”.

They added: “Police Scotland and the relevant authorities were informed and the appropriate action has been taken with the pupil involved.
“Parents, carers and staff were issued with a message to inform them of the incident and provide reassurance that the incident has been handled in an effective and efficient manner.”

Police Scotland confirmed it was alerted around 9.10am.
A force spokesperson added: “Officers spoke with the guardians of the child and police are working with partners in relation to the matter.”
