And according to the Sky Weather team, by early next week, daytime temperatures will be around 10C (50F) lower in parts of the south compared to recently.

Met Office deputy chief meteorologist Dan Holley said that the high pressure to the northwest “will drive a cold northerly flow from the Arctic”, bringing with it “much colder conditions than of late”.

He added: “There will be widespread frosts across the UK, with temperatures dipping as low as -7C in places next week, and daytime temperatures staying in single figures across the country.

“Couple this with a brisk northerly wind, and there will be a marked wind chill. This will be a notable change in our weather after a prolonged spell of above-average temperatures.”

Mr Holley also warned “it is possible warnings may be issued for snow and ice at times”.

Cold weather warnings next week

For Sunday itself, the Met Office forecasts the weather to be “dull in the south to start with further drizzle” before clearing, and holds that elsewhere it will be “largely dry with bright spells though a band of showers moving into the far north”.

It comes after the UK Health Security Agency issued a cold weather warning for parts of the Midlands and northern England from Monday.

The cold weather alert is in place from 8am on Monday until 8am next Friday. It covers the East Midlands, West Midlands, North East, North West and Yorkshire and The Humber.
